About the film

Robert Eggers presents a visionary resurrection of the legendary vampire mythos in this masterful gothic horror, as the haunted young Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) is stalked by the terrifying shadow of Nosferatu (Bill Skarsgård).

19th-century Germany. The young Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) holds a haunting secret. While married to her home salesman husband Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), she experiences powerful visions of death stalking her life, as the terrifying vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) becomes infatuated with her.

With the shadow of evil consuming the town, Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz (Willem Defoe) rounds up a brave army to confront the monster – but the strange demonic allure of Nosferatu casts a spell on Ellen, guiding her towards the towering Orlok Castle…

The original 1922 film, a product of the Weimar Republic, not only reflected political concerns but also embodied the artistic expression of that era.

The film was later remade by Werner Herzog in 1979, who, while acknowledging the original as ‘the greatest film ever to come out of Germany’, sought to reassess the story in the context of post-war Germany, a nation grappling with the aftermath of World War II and the division of the country

.

Eggers’ Nosferatu can be seen as reflecting American political anxieties, emerging from the shadow of a looming second Trump presidency, the perpetual threat of war, and ongoing cultural transitions.

The director’s reimagining of the enduring tale transcends mere imitation, conjuring a spellbinding gothic atmosphere with previous genre masterclasses The VVitch and The Lighthouse, director Eggers proves himself to be the perfect filmmaker to resurrect this unholy 1922 classic, taking a stake to the heart of horror cinema with an alluring possession of scares and seduction

Nosferatu was nominated for 4 Oscars in Production Design, Costume design, Cinematography and Make up + Hairstyling.
